Public Service Marketing: Making More Than Just Your Brand Look Good

KFC has sent a letter to US mayors, offering to fill up potholes in their cities’ streets. In return for the “favor”, KFC would mark the filled potholes with the words “Re-freshed by KFC” in non-permanent street chalk.

 Utilizing a similar public service marketing strategy, Domino’s Pizza cleaned the sidewalks in 220 spots in NY, LA and Philly, leaving a company logo behind. The campaign included a sweeps element that offered $15 gift cards to the first 250 people who emailed pictures of themselves beside the Domino’s designs.

Online Video: View Access and Authentication

Digital content distribution changed the Music and Newspaper industries drastically.  Television is now feeling the pressure to develop more standardized business models for online viewing of broadcast content.

 Cable operators Comcast and Time Warner have partnered to usher in industry-wide authentication for online viewing.  For consumers, this essentially means that a cable or satellite subscription would be required in order to view particular programs online.  Those that don’t have a subscription would have partial or no access to these programs online.

Newspaper Websites Seeking Paid Content Models

While newspaper circulations are rapidly declining, their online counterparts are growing. A custom analysis done by Nielsen Online for the Newspaper Association of the America revealed that newspaper sites attracted more than 68.3 million unique visitors in 3Q 2008, up 15.8% from the previous year. Despite their growth online, JP Morgan estimates that newspaper revenues will be down 20% this year.

 After finding that they can’t survive on ad revenues alone newspapers are looking to charge visitors to access their content online. Currently there are two third party vendors looking to help breathe life into this dying industry…
