2010 ARF Conference in NYC

Author: Gavin ThomasWednesday, March 24th, 2010 at 9:26 amConsumer, Conversational

This week, Keith Betz and Andria DiFelice of Butler/Till are attending the 2010 Advertising Research Foundation conference in New York.  We wanted to share a bit of news from the conference with our readers.  Here is a note from Keith as well as a few video updates from the show.  Stay tuned… more updates to come!

Here’s an update from the 2010 ARF Conference in NYC, a meeting of some of the best and brightest research focused industry folks you would ever want to meet. This year’s theme is “The New Normal” which posits that with all of the rapidly shifting technologies in media and research, things will never be the same. Hanging on to the hope that things will return to “normal” is a ticket to failure.

Understandably, there has been a huge focus on these new technologies, everything from mobile apps to billboards capable of recognizing age/sex of viewers and delivering messages accordingly. I’ve sat in on a few seminars rooted in neuroscience that provide insights into how/why the human brain reacts to certain advertising messages. There has also been a lot of talk surrounding online engagement and the effect this engagement has on brands. Social media has been a part of almost all discussions in one way or another, but has moved past the “you need to be on Facebook” story. Researchers are now focusing on how to leverage the insights garnered from monitoring all of the tweets, posts and blogs and turning that into actionable response from advertisers. Advertisers focused on actually advertising through social media are missing the point, and instead should be engaging, talking with and learning from the conversations taking place. The top research minds from NBC, Nielsen, ComScore, Google, IBM, Coca-Cola….they’re all here and are helping to make this a very valuable learning experience.

iMedia Breakthrough Summit Update

Author: Gavin ThomasMonday, March 22nd, 2010 at 3:53 pmDigital

Mike Davis – one of our Senior Digital Media Planner/Buyers here at Butler/Till is currently attending the iMedia Breakthrough Summit in Florida.  I got a chance to catch up with him for an update from the conference – specifically with regards to mobile trends and updates.  Here’s what he had to say:

iMedia Breakthrough Summit – Mobile Bootcamp

Just a quick update from iMedia after attending Mobile Boot Camp with some of the top minds in the industry yesterday… Everyone keeps asking when the year of mobile will be? Was it 2009, will it be 2010, 2011? I don’t know the answer to that but what I do know is that mobile is here now and it’s already an effective platform to engage with consumers. Not to mention the fact that mobile internet usage is projected to surpass desktop internet usage a lot faster than most realize.

SXSW Day 4 Keynote w/ Ev Williams of Twitter

Author: Gavin ThomasMonday, March 15th, 2010 at 1:55 pmConversational

Hey everyone… we decided to bring a little bit of SXSW day 4 right to you.  We just sat down to a packed house for the Day 4 keynote conversation with Evan Williams – cofounder of Twitter.  I’ll be doing my best to keep up with some of the most important highlights from the conversation.  Forgive the brevity of the updates – we’ll be able to go into more detail later.  Thanks for following along.  Cheers!

One note: we don’t have auto-refresh on Media Mosaic, so either set your browsers to refresh automatically or do it manually to follow along in realtime.

Real-time Notes:

- About to get started here… doors are closed as we’re at full capacity.  And this is a HUGE room…

- SXSW founder starting off by giving props to Twitter for allowing this conference to explode in the last 4 years.

- Ev Williams is now out on stage to a big round of applause.  He is starting out right away with the new content platform… this is big news folks.  It’s called @anywhere… now rolling a video of how it works…

- It’s content based… features immediate follow functionality and look much like Google contextual text ads.  Some sites already signed on… Amazon, Digg, Youtube, (list goes on – all huge names)…  First thought – this expands Twitter’s reach and drives the functionality and tool into the real mainstream.

- On sites like NYTimes.com (and all sites using this new feature) you can tweet directly from the column/article.  Thought: this will be huge for content-driven sites and expands the immediacy of thought distribution.  “It’s a platform that lets sites juice up their own platforms.”

- They’re labeling this “@platform”  - not necessarily a direct ad platform.

- The nature of this platform makes Twitter faster, easier, and more understandable in my opinion.  I also feel this could go a long way for publishers and news portals who are losing audience.  It’s now easier to share relevant content directly on those sites.

- Williams is now praising his Twitter staff and giving kudos to users who have not only helped shape this tool, but Twitter as a whole.  It’s very true… and give Twitter praise for recognizing needs and reshaping functionality based on what users want.

- Ev now talking about how openness is the key to Twitter as well as the basis to which his company runs.  They believe in the the concept of sharing information.  Openness does not necessarily mean transparency… he says “a window is transparent, but a door is open.”

- “Assume there are more smart people outside the company than inside it.”  - Williams preaches this to his employees.  I love that concept.

- Through discussion and debate about only making this available to the big bidders, Twitter is apparently going to eventually begin to make this available to everyone on the web… down to the small mom and pop sites.

- “Openness can be used against you.” – Williams… so they still have to manage. (blocking users, spam, cease-and-desist orders, etc.).  Though: that’s music to the ears of advertisers who are afraid of the nature of this type of an open ecosystem.

- Williams just read a pretty powerful email from a citizen in Chile praising and thanking Twitter for being the only tool they could use to communicate with the outside world during a time of disaster.  SMS capabilities in this for people who couldn’t get access to the internet.

Alright folks… that’s the big news.  I think this is going to be a pretty powerful tool and extend the use of Twitter by individuals, brands, and advertisers.  And, oh yeah, it’s going to make Twitter a lot of dough through these partnerships.  The session is wrapping up with some basic conversations… we’ll fill you in on all of that later.  If you have questions, drop us a line.  Thanks for following along!

SXSW Day 2 – Crowdsourcing

Author: Gavin ThomasSunday, March 14th, 2010 at 3:41 amConversational

Just a quick update from last night – it’s taking a bit of time to upload the video updates down here in Austin… understandably so since 12,000+ people are all utilizing the same wireless network.  The staff and bandwidth have been fantastic so far, but as you can imagine video uploads are a bit slow.  As soon as we have our update from last night uploaded, we’ll post it.  It will be a 2 part video, since there was so much great info from Day 2 of SXSWi.  Thanks for your patience!

Missing SXSW?

Author: Gavin ThomasThursday, March 11th, 2010 at 9:20 amConversational, Digital

Are you not able to head to Austin for South by Southwest Interactive this weekend?  No worries… we’ve got you covered.  Michael Deichmiller and I will be traveling down to Austin tomorrow morning for this year’s interactive festival.  We’ll be posting daily video updates on some of the coolest takeaways we saw from each day’s panels and events.  That is, if the entire bandwidth of Austin, TX doesn’t crash 30 minutes into the conference…

Feel free to ask us any questions before, during or after the festival.  We know… seeing our ugly mugs won’t be the same as attending the event yourself, but we hope to bring a small piece of SXSWi to each of you via Media Mosaic.  Leave your questions or comments throughout the weekend right on our posts, or contact us via Twitter at anytime (@gavinthomas11 or @mikedeichmiller).  As always, we truly appreciate your readership and hope to thank you by giving back some content from the SXSW show!
